GE is committed to Africa’s sustainable development in the power sector. In Tanzania, GE has developed major energy projects which include;

150 MW Kinyerezi power plant

The 150 MW Kinyerezi power plant was developed by Jacobsen Elektro AS for TANESCO. The LM6000-PF units provided by GE have dry low emissions (DLE) 1.5 technology with triple annular combustors and dual-fuel operation, eliminating the need for water injection for emissions abatement, while reducing NOx.

Installation for the second phase which will add 185MW to the grid using GEs LM6000PF dual fuel Gas Turbines is currently ongoing and expected to be commissioned in 2019.

Multiyear service agreement for Songas Ubungo Power plant

Songas owns four GE LM6000 gas turbines which it has been operating at Ubungo Power Plant since 2004. The upgrades signed with Songas in May 2017 will enable Songas increase efficiency and power capacity at the Ubungo plant.

Under the agreement, GE will upgrade three of the four LM6000 gas turbines in the fleet from the LM6000PA to the LM 6000PC, increasing the output of the units from 38 megawatts (MW) to 43 MW each—and reaching output levels of up to 46 MW with GE’s optional SPRINT technology. The eight-year multiyear service agreement, which also includes maintenance and repairs of the gas turbines, will enable Songas to increase the efficiency of the Ubungo plant to around 41 percent—approximately a 3 percent improvement.

Zanzibar Interconnector and Distribution Substations Rehabilitation and Extension

GE Grid Solutions successfully completed the Zanzibar interconnector and distribution substations rehabilitation and extension project, in September 2013, whose scope included building new substations and rehabilitation and extension of existing substations ranging from 33kV, 132kV to 220kV. The project has enabled TANESCO improve the reliability and quality of power to industrial and commercial users, as well as households.

The project was funded by Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), USA. Funded by the United States Government, the Millennium Challenge Account is a development fund that aims to reduce poverty and stimulate economic growth.

TANESCO SCADA/EMS Control Centre

GE Grid Solutions, as the lead EPC, completed the construction of the TANESCO National Control Centre where all the Substation and the Power plants have been integrated and controlled from.

Financed by TANESCO, the system has been in operation since October 2010. Following the warranty period of the project, GE Grid Solutions was awarded a three years’ maintenance support contract including training services to TANESCO.

Improving the Reliability of Electric Power Supply in The City of Dar es Salaam

GE Grid Solutions was selected by ELTEL as technology provider for Distribution Management System (DMS) and associated Telecommunication System as part of the project on improving the reliability of Electric Power Supply in the City of Dar Es Salaam. The DMS system was successfully delivered and has been in operation since October 2015. This will improve the power system availability in Dar Es Salaam, enabling electricity access which is a great value to the people..
