Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (formerly Otibhor Okhae Teaching Hospital), Irrua was Established by Decree 92 of 1993 (Appendix I) to provide tertiary Health Care Delivery Services to the people of Edo State and beyond. The Decree among other things provided for a Board of Management for the hospital with the statutory responsibility of policy formulation for the hospital.
The hospital is located in Irrua, Edo Central Senatorial District, along the Benin-Abuja highway at about 87 kilometers north of Benin City, the Edo State Capital (Appendix II). The Location of the Hospital on the Benin-Abuja highway has positioned it to become a notable Centre for the Treatment of Accident Victims.
Plans are underway to establish a branch of the Save Accident Victims Association of Nigeria (SAVAN) in the hospital, to enable the organization complement the efforts of the Hospital in the provision of succor to accident victims.
Irrua is situated on the Ishan plateau, some 87 kilometers north of Benin City. The vegetation is mixed rainforest and transition Guinea Savanna.
The natives are mainly farmers, but Irrua is literally surrounded by towns with tertiary educational institutions: located 5 Km to the south is Ekpoma with Ambrose Alli University and 40 Km to the north is Auchi with a Federal Polytechnic while about 25 Km to the southeast is Igueben with a College of Education and a new University at Ogwa (Samuel Adegboyega University).
ISTH Irrua, Edo State was established by Decree No. 92 of 1993 as the 9th or 14th Teaching Hospital in Nigeria. It was commissioned on the 21st of November 1991 by the former Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Admiral Augustus Aikhomu. Clinical activities did not however, commence until May, 1993.
ISTH currently has a branch at Ubiaja and it’s growing very fast!
