Il s’agit, de la province du Sud-Kivu, la province du Nork-Kivu et celle de Maniema. Son nom vient de deux grands sommets de volcans éteints dont le mont Kahuzi (3 308 m d’altitude) et le mont Biega (2 790 m d’altitude).
