Global streaming giant, Spotify, on Wednesday named Nigerian singer-songwriter Simi its EQUAL Africa music programme ambassador for July.<\/p>\n
This announcement follows the release of her latest album, \u2018TBH (To Be Honest)\u2019, released in June.<\/p>\n
Simi joins other Nigerian artists, Tiwa Savage, Ayra Starr, Asa, and FAVE, who have featured on EQUAL Africa in the past.<\/p>\n
The platform aims to spotlight and amplify the voices of talented African female artists making waves in the music scene.<\/p>\n
Simi is the second African musician after Tiwa Savage to be named Spotify EQUAL Global and EQUAL Africa artist.<\/p>\n
Reacting to her recognition, she said: \u201cStriving and thriving as a woman in a male-dominated industry has taken years of practice to master. You go from being scared to being intimidated by it, brave enough for it and finally conquer it.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018I\u2019ve almost always had to do more than my male peers to prove myself. But, because of my love for music, I have been relentless and proud to do this work. With all my heart, I hope that the women who continue to come after me find it easier to shine in the way they deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n
The EQUAL programme
\nSpotify says the EQUAL programme aims to foster gender equality and provide a platform to celebrate in\ufb02uential female artists.<\/p>\n
Simi joins a list of talented African women driving the culture and breaking through barriers in the music industry.<\/p>\n

The EQUAL programme spans seven categories: the EQUAL Artists of the Month and the EQUAL local playlists. As the latest artist to join EQUAL Africa and Global Music Programs, Simi will feature on EQUAL Africa and the EQUAL Global playlists.<\/p>\n
Spotify, launched in 2008, is currently the world\u2019s most popular audio streaming subscription service with 422m users, including 182m subscribers, across 183 markets.<\/p>\n
Background
\nBorn Simi Bolatito Ogunleye, the Nigerian musician, sound engineer and actress started her musical journey as a chorister.<\/p>\n
Simi released her debut studio album \u2018Ogaju\u2019 in 2008 before switching genres to Afro-pop.<\/p>\n
She came onto the public\u2019s radar in 2014 after releasing the single, \u2018TIFF\u2019, which was nominated for Best Alternative Song at The Headies in 2015.<\/p>\n
Her 2016 single, \u2018Jamb Question\u2019, was a hit, topping music charts for weeks.
