For years, the phrase \u2018Africa rising\u2019 was applied to the continent\u2019s growing economies and vibrant business space. But it\u2019s becoming increasingly apparent that the phrase could equally be applied to Africa\u2019s music scene.<\/p>\n
While these collaborations have historic precedent \u2014 think about Miriam Makeba\u2019s work with Harry Belafonte in the 1960s or Lady Smith Black Mambazo\u2019s collaboration with Paul Simon in the 1980s \u2014 they have never come thicker, faster, or included a more diverse collection of artistes from across the continent than they do today.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s difficult to pinpoint when the trickle became a torrent, but there have been a few seminal moments. In 2021 Burna Boy took home a Grammy for his album Twice as Tall and was featured on tracks by the likes of Sia, Justin Bieber, and John Legend.
