{"id":355,"date":"2022-01-12T06:06:57","date_gmt":"2022-01-12T06:06:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/appsaf.apieproject.com\/news\/?p=355"},"modified":"2022-01-24T14:31:22","modified_gmt":"2022-01-24T14:31:22","slug":"widow-of-south-africas-zulu-king-launches-legal-succession-bid-in-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/appsaf.apieproject.com\/news\/2022\/01\/12\/widow-of-south-africas-zulu-king-launches-legal-succession-bid-in-court\/","title":{"rendered":"Widow of South Africa\u2019s Zulu king launches legal succession bid in court"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>One of the six widows of South Africa\u2019s Zulu king launched a legal succession bid on Tuesday, arguing that she is the monarch\u2019s only legitimate widow as they had a civil marriage, while he wed his five other wives only according to traditional rites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/mar\/22\/king-goodwill-zwelithini-obituary\">King Goodwill Zwelithini died in March last year&nbsp;<\/a>at age 72 after 50 years on the throne, leaving behind his six wives and at least 28 children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his will he had named his favourite, third wife, Shiyiwe Mantfombi Dlamini, as regent of the more than 11 million Zulus who make up nearly a fifth of South Africa\u2019s population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/apr\/30\/zulu-nation-ruler-queen-mantfombi-dlamini-dies-aged-65\">Shiyiwe died suddenly in April \u2013 just a month after the king<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 leaving a will designating their son Misuzulu Zulu, 47, to ascend to the throne. The coronation has yet to take place, and Misuzulu did not attend Tuesday\u2019s hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, several other Zulu royals were present, some wearing animal skins around their shoulders or a fur crown on their heads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lawyer for Queen Sibongile Dlamini, the king\u2019s first wife who is contesting Misuzulu\u2019s right to the throne, asked the court: \u201cDoes a civil marriage preclude customary marriage?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cvalidity of the customary marriages is one of the main issues, your worship,\u201d Nigel Redman added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the six widows of South Africa\u2019s Zulu king launched a legal succession bid on Tuesday, arguing that she is the monarch\u2019s only legitimate widow as they had a civil marriage, while he wed his five other wives only according to traditional rites.
