Ask any traveller about their experience moving across parts of\u00a0Africa\u00a0and you will likely hear about familiar challenges: high costs, indirect routes and unpredictable schedules that can make even the simplest journeys more complicated and costly. These travel hurdles highlight the immense opportunity to further strengthen Africa\u2019s integration and unlock seamless connectivity across the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The potential is undeniable. According to the World Bank, the\u00a0African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)\u00a0stands to be the world\u2019s largest free trade zone, encompassing 1.4 billion people and a combined GDP of $3.4trn. The African Development Bank (AfDB) projects that eliminating existing barriers could double intra-African trade within a decade from its current 15% \u2013 a figure that pales in comparison to Asia\u2019s 60% and Europe\u2019s 65%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite meaningful progress through the AfCFTA implementation led by regional economic communities, fulfilling this promise will require more effort. Africa requires\u00a0robust physical infrastructure\u00a0and an\u00a0operating system update\u00a0to modernise institutional frameworks and encourage a new ecosystem of African-made goods and services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Africa\u2019s integration challenge can be likened to building a cutting-edge computer system. Success first requires powerful hardware \u2013 the physical infrastructure forming the backbone. The continent faces an annual infrastructure\u00a0financing gap of $130-$170bn\u00a0to meet essential hardware requirements across transportation corridors, energy networks and digital highways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While international partners have historically played a crucial role in bridging this financing gap, the geopolitical landscape demands a paradigm shift. Africa must take the lead in investing in its own hardware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The key is in first mobilising African public and private capital to build confidence among international partners and investors. Substantial\u00a0capital can be generated\u00a0within the continent through sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, high-net-worth individuals and other sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Development finance institutions like the AfDB must also play a transformative role by leveraging their expertise and credit ratings to channel this locally sourced capital into Africa\u2019s development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Alliance for Green Infrastructure in Africa (AGIA), launched by the AfDB in partnership with Africa50 and the\u00a0African Union, exemplifies this approach, mobilising project preparation and project development blended capital to build a $10bn portfolio of\u00a0green infrastructure projects\u00a0with private sector participation from Africa and around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Regional\u00a0energy\u00a0integration, as highlighted by Mission 300 launched recently in\u00a0Tanzania, is equally important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beyond physical infrastructure, Africa\u2019s integration requires modern software upgrade \u2013 the systems, policies and institutional frameworks that power trade across borders. Digital solutions are key to enhancing business operations across borders and reducing trade barriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While discussions often focus on physical infrastructure gaps,\u00a0outdated manual processes\u00a0frequently limit the effectiveness of existing assets. The\u00a0Pan-African Payment and Settlement System\u00a0(PAPSS) exemplifies this transformation, promising to save $5bn annually by making cross-border payments simpler and more transparent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pilot programmes in East Africa have shown that applying blockchain technology to existing value chains could help reduce trade costs by 20%<\/strong>, enhance protection against fraud and expand access to new markets for businesses across the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As African leaders convene at the\u00a0AU Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, we are at a pivotal time that requires action \u2013 the finalisation of the Protocol on Digital Trade under the AfCFTA is a first step towards the bold transformation that we must operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Africa must pursue economic transformation through infrastructure development and\u00a0technology\u00a0integration in our trade operations to evolve from a raw material exporter into an industrial and agricultural powerhouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Beyond manufacturing value-added goods and value creation,\u00a0 our ability to\u00a0integrate essential services\u00a0\u2013 financial services, transport and\u00a0logistics, education and healthcare \u2013 will facilitate seamless business operations across borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n By positioning economic transformation at the heart of our integration agenda, Africa can\u00a0advance up the value chain\u00a0to generate wealth and create quality economic opportunities for all Africans,\u00a0particularly our youth and women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n With Africa\u2019s youth population set to double by 2050, the urgency of this transformation cannot be overstated.
