{"id":41126,"date":"2026-03-16T00:03:54","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T00:03:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/appsaf.apieproject.com\/news\/?p=41126"},"modified":"2026-03-23T00:16:16","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T00:16:16","slug":"nomzamo-mbatha-from-south-africa-to-global-stage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/appsaf.apieproject.com\/news\/2026\/03\/16\/nomzamo-mbatha-from-south-africa-to-global-stage\/","title":{"rendered":"Nomzamo Mbatha: From South Africa to Global Stage"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South African actress Nomzamo Mbatha has portrayed some memorable characters over her career, but there\u2019s one with a special historical significance that has given her a new-found freedom<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mbatha, 35, is currently filming the third and final season of the critically acclaimed series \u201cShaka iLembe,\u201d based on the life of arguably the most famous person in South African history, King Shaka Zulu. Mbatha plays his mother, Queen Nandi, a woman born around 1760 who, despite dealing with extreme poverty and rejection, managed to raise a man who became a preeminent Zulu leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Queen Nandi is celebrated as a founding figure of the Zulu nation and Mbatha said portraying her has been a privilege.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been the greatest honor of my life playing this woman,\u201d she told CNN\u2019s Larry Madowo while on set at the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage site some 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Johannesburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result of the role, Mbatha said she has become \u201cmuch more courageous, much braver and just stubborn. I was never a stubborn person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"groundbreaking-series\">Groundbreaking series<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShaka iLembe\u201d is said to be the most expensive South African series ever produced, and the new season is expected to premiere sometime this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mbatha, also an executive producer, said the show\u2019s success comes from its unique approach to telling the story of the controversial leader. Shaka Zulu was described as a ruthless leader who expanded his kingdom through violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe thing about \u2018Shaka iLembe,\u2019 the special thing about it, is that it tells a pre-colonial lens of Africa. And unfortunately, a lot of the big scale productions that we see have a colonial point of view to it or a colonial leaning towards it. This is something that said it will be completely disruptive and be completely for the people who are the custodians of this,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The show, which employs about 200 crew members a day, has received global recognition. \u201cSouth Africans \u2026 when it comes to \u2018Shaka iLembe,\u2019 have just been truly, truly supportive,\u201dMbatha said. \u201cI\u2019ve never seen people love a show like that and I don\u2019t even think my name is Nomzamo anymore \u2026 everywhere I go it\u2019s like \u2018Queen Nandi, Queen Nandi.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"when-hollywood-calls\">When Hollywood calls<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mbatha is no stranger to the South African audience, having made her debut in the 2013 popular TV drama \u201cIsibaya.\u201d But she was introduced to the world stage in 2021, when she played the role of Mirembe in the hit-movie sequel \u201cComing 2 America.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had impostor syndrome in the beginning because I thought, can I really do this? Can I pull this off? \u2026 Because it\u2019s \u2026 a lead character, my first Hollywood film \u2014 and it was just an unbelievable experience,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just months after \u201cComing 2 America\u201d was released, Mbatha found herself on another Hollywood set, starring alongside film icon Bruce Willis. \u201cBruce was incredibly friendly, really lovely, so respectful, and also, he had that charm, you know, the Bruce Willis smirk,\u201d she said. \u201cOne of the kindest people I\u2019ve worked with.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mbatha is one of the last actresses to work with Willis, 70, who retired from acting in March 2022 following a diagnosis of aphasia, which has progressed to\u00a0frontotemporal dementia\u00a0(FTD), a progressive, brain disease affecting communication, behavior, and personality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"beyond-acting\">Beyond acting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mbatha has received numerous honors, including being named to the 2025 TIME100 Next list, being the first South African ambassador for the skincare company Neutrogena, and the hair care company Creme of Nature, and being the face of Levi\u2019s curvy campaign. Despite her growing list of accomplishments, her desire to help others remains steadfast. It\u2019s a passion she has had since age 14, when she traveled to Kenya as a Save the Children representative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was the first time seeing kids from Somalia, from Sudan, from Cameroon, from Congo, from Kenya, and I just thought, \u2018Wow, this is who we are.\u2019 It sparked something inside of me and that\u2019s when I knew; I\u2019ve got to work for the United Nations one day,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That dream came true in 2019, when she became a representative for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>(UNHCR). That it\u2019s ok for you to lean into something that\u2019s beyond your own borders,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to her work with UNHCR, Mbatha supports the international advocacy organization Global Citizen, focusing on education and gender equality. That mission also drives the Nomzamo Lighthouse Foundation, a nonprofit she founded in 2015. She is also a climate advocate, becoming a global ambassador for Prince William\u2019s Earthshot Prize in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cClimate action affects every single part of our lives, and if you think it doesn\u2019t affect your life, then you are living a lie \u2026 I think it\u2019s important \u2026 to be able to power those who are doing something, who are finding really significant and scalable solutions,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mbatha believes that because she is a \u201cproduct of charitable efforts\u201d \u2014 having gotten where she is because of the help given to her as a child from teachers and from the bursary she used to attend university \u2014 that it is her \u201cmoral duty\u201d to help others. \u201cIf I can be able to use my voice and use my platform to make that difference, then I know that I would have done something really significant with my life,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As she continues that journey, Mbatha hopes to leave a legacy that will cement her place in history, just like Queen Nandi.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South African actress Nomzamo Mbatha has portrayed some memorable characters over her career, but there\u2019s one with a special historical significance that has given her a new-found freedom.
