The\u00a0resolution\u00a0spearheaded by\u00a0Ghana\u00a0received 123\u00a0votes in favour.\u00a0\u00a0Three countries\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Argentina,\u00a0Israel\u00a0and the United States \u2013 voted against\u00a0and 52 abstained.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToday, we come together in solemn solidarity to affirm truth and pursue a route to healing and reparative justice,\u201d said Ghana\u2019s President John Dramani Mahama, speaking ahead of the vote on behalf of the 54-member African Group \u2013 the largest regional bloc at the UN. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stolen, shackled, shipped<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For more than 400 years, millions of people were stolen from Africa, put in shackles and shipped to the New World to toil in cotton fields and sugar and coffee plantations under scorching heat and the crack of the whip. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Denied their basic humanity and even their own names,\u00a0they\u00a0were\u00a0forced to endure generations of exploitation with repercussions that reverberate today\u00a0including persistent anti-Black racism and discrimination.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resolution emphasised\u00a0\u201cthe trafficking of enslaved Africans and racialised chattel enslavement of Africans as\u00a0the gravest crime against humanity\u00a0by reason of the definitive break in world history, scale, duration, systemic nature, brutality and enduring consequences that continue to structure the lives of all people through racialized regimes of labour, property and capital.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Address wrongs, support reparations<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It affirmed the importance of addressing historical wrongs affecting Africans and people of\u00a0the diaspora\u00a0in a manner that promotes justice, human rights,\u00a0dignity\u00a0and\u00a0healing, while emphasising that\u00a0claims for reparations\u00a0represent\u00a0a concrete step towards remedy.\u202f \u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The text was \u201chighly problematic in countless respects,\u201d Ambassador Dan Negrea, US representative to the UN\u00a0Economic and Social Council\u00a0(ECOSOC), said prior to the vote.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He regretted that Washington \u201cmust once again remind this body that the United Nations exists to maintain international peace and security\u201d and \u201cwas not founded to advance narrow specific interests and agendas, to establish niche International Days, or to create new costly meeting and reporting mandates.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, the US \u201cdoes not recognise a legal right to reparations for historical wrongs that were not illegal under international law at the time they occurred.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A grave human rights violation<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The horrors of slavery echoed in the General Assembly Hall\u00a0as\u00a0Member States\u00a0commemorated\u00a0the International Day\u00a0to remember its victims.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe slave trade and slavery stand among the gravest violations of human rights in human history \u2013 an affront to the very principles enshrined in the Charter of our United Nations\u00a0and the\u00a0Universal Declaration of Human Rights,\u00a0themselves born, in part, from these injustices of the past,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Assembly President Annalena Baerbock.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The countries where enslaved Africans were taken from also suffered \u201ca hollowing out\u201d having lost entire generations who potentially could have helped them to prosper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was, to put it in colder terms,\u00a0mass resource extraction,\u201d she\u00a0said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remove persistent barriers<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

UN\u00a0Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres\u00a0called for\u00a0confronting slavery\u2019s lasting legacies of inequality and racism.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow we must remove the persistent barriers that prevent so many people of African descent from exercising their rights and realising their potential,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe must commit \u2014 fully and without hesitation \u2014 to human rights, equality, and the inherent worth of every person.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this regard,\u00a0the Second International Decade for People of African Descent\u00a0and\u00a0the African Union\u2019s Decade of Reparations are significant.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Respect for African countries<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

He urged countries to use them to drive action to eradicate systemic racism, ensure reparatory justice and accelerate inclusive development, marked by equal access to education, health, employment, housing, and a safe environment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut\u00a0far bolder actions \u2014\u202fby many more States \u2014\u202fare needed,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis includes commitments to respect African countries\u2019 ownership of their own natural resources.\u00a0And steps to ensure their equal participation and influence in the global financial architecture and the UN\u00a0Security Council.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No peace without reparatory justice<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Poet Laureate of Barbados, Esther Philips, read from some of her works including a piece about a young girl walking on the grounds of a former sugar plantation and not understanding its historical significance as her ancestors buried there look on.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are spirits of the victims of slavery present in this room at this moment, and they are listening for one word only: justice,\u201d Ms. Philips told delegates.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBecause for them and for the world, there can be no peace without justice \u2013reparatory justice \u2013 and that call is answered only when words are turned into action. The question is, what will you do?\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
