The event, taking place on 11 June, will “test the skills and the handiwork of local sewists, fashion designers, and costume designers – from beginners to advanced,” a press statement explains.
The sew-a-thon will put the creative and technical skills of beginner, intermediate and advanced contestants to the test, with one person in each grouping walking away with a cash prize.
“Cosplay is a cornerstone of Comic Con Africa, and behind every great cosplay is a great designer. We are hoping that this challenge highlights more craftmanship,” said Comic Con Africa director Rene Staack.
“We encourage all to act fast with their registrations as space is limited.”
For those who choose to enter, the main challenge will remain a secret until two weeks before the competition. Once the brief has been revealed, contestants will be asked to do the following:
Create a storyboard explaining how they researched and designed their outfit.
Produce a pattern of their own making for their design which they will bring along to the competition.
The design/garment must be fully prepared but not finished. The different elements may be cut out with completed seams but cannot have any finishing details. The assembly of the outfit can only be done during the allocated competition times.
“To add to the intensity, within the limited time frame, contestants will also be given a side challenge to create items that will be donated to Comic Con Africa’s selected charity,” the statement further explains.
