In the 18th century, Praslin Island was used as a hideaway by Arab merchants and pirates. In 1768 the isle was officially named “Praslin” ihonoring the French diplomat Cesar Gabriel de Choiseul (“duc de Praslin”).
Praslin is a well known Seychelles tourist travel destination. It features several resorts and hotels, as well as a number of amazing beaches, like Anse Georgette and Anse Lazio. Among the other popular features are substantial areas of tropical forests and exotic birds (like Seychelles bulbuls and black parrots). Vallee de Mai Nature Preserve (founded 1979) is best known for its unique vanilla orchids and sea coconuts (coco de mer).
A vast marine area in the south of the island has been designated “Praslin National Park”, and the surrounding areas – “Important Bird Area”.
