France, friend or foe of Africa?

Must Read

France enjoys a strong presence on the African continent with a strong presence of French companies in key sectors such as energy, telecommunications and infrastructure. However, some critics accuse France of exploiting Africa’s natural resources for its own benefit, without really contributing to the economic development of African countries.

A mixed French policy in Africa

Politically, relations between Africa and France have been marked by controversial military interventions. France has carried out several military operations in Africa, particularly in Mali and the Central African Republic, to fight against terrorism. These interventions have been welcomed by some African countries, but criticized by others who see them as interference in the internal affairs of the countries concerned. For centuries, Africa and France have maintained complex and often tumultuous relations. While France was a major player in the colonization of the African continent, it also played an important role in the decolonization and independence of many African countries. Today, relations between Africa and France are marked by economic, political and cultural issues. France is really no longer welcome on the continent. This rejection exists with many countries and an anti-French sentiment is constantly growing.

Economically, France is an important trading partner for many African countries. Trade between the two parties is constantly increasing. Multinationals such as Orange, Bolloré Logistique, Canal + or Total are making impressive profits on the backs of Africans. Sometimes charging exorbitant prices compared to the prices charged on French soil. The mobile operator Orange has also been singled out in recent weeks in Togo, Côte d’Ivoire and Cameroon. Users complained about internet costs, call plans and network quality. Claims that led to the airplane mode demonstrations in which customers put their phones on airplane mode for a set period of time. Orange products, services and events have been widely boycotted on the continent.

A declining cultural hegemony

Finally, on the cultural level, France maintains close ties with many African countries thanks to its language and culture. French is the official language of many African countries, and France is an important player in promoting French-speaking culture in Africa. However, some critics accuse France of wanting to impose its culture on African countries, to the detriment of their own cultures and traditions. As a consequence, a powerful pan-Africanist and kamite wind has emerged on the continent. It was manifested by the outing of Franco-Congolese rapper Maitre Gims, who said that in ancient Africa, the Egyptian pyramids produced quite a bit of electricity.

In addition, France, like many Western countries, has decided to repatriate African objects and art back to the continent. A significant advance in terms of culture. But today, the real fight remains the language. As long as some African countries retain French as their national language, it will clearly be very difficult to free themselves from the colonial yoke imposed by France.
