National Museum of Burundi was opened in 1955 in the town of Gitega, located east of the capital Bujumbura.

The National Museum contains archival information about the country’s history, photos monarchies Burundi, drums kingdom, starting with the oldest copies. Here you can see samples of historical clothing and jewelry Burundians, learn about modern combat ethnic conflict and genocide.

The museum is housed in two buildings: the main compartment and drums located close to each other. The department drums are shown various designs of drums and their production. Dancers perform songs and dances to the accompaniment of the instruments.

Gitega is the second largest city in Burundi. The height of the center of the city is 1,658 meters above sea level. In March 2007, the President of Burundi Pierre Nkurunziza announced that he plans to return capital of Burundi in Gitega.
